Don't overthink it, no-one ever regretted more dancing in their life!

Is the course suitable for beginners?
The course is for those just starting out and those who have danced before. We all learn differently and each routine will present its own challenges (in a good way) which is part of the fun. People of all ages, sizes and abilities have enjoyed the Charleston courses but it is essential that you come with a sense of humour, the intention to learn and a little bit of patience with yourself. Each course starts from scratch with the basic Charleston step so no prior knowledge or experience is needed. One of things I love most about teaching the routines is that people always amaze themselves!

What shall I wear?
On weeks 1-5, wear anything you are comfortable in that allows you to move freely. I recommend layers as we do warm up quite quickly. On week 6, we dress up to the nines!
For footwear, shoes that don't have too much grip are best, whether dance shoes or ordinary shoes with a fairly smooth sole ie not trainers or shoes with rubbery tread, as we need to be free to swivel on the balls of our feet.

What if I can't make all six course dates?
In addition to the classes at the halls, the course price includes online resources:
-
Video tutorials
-
Online classes
-
Recordings of the online classes
This allows you to see the routine broken down and demonstrated by the choreographers, and to practice if you would like to, which is especially helpful if you do have to miss any classes at the hall. However, the previous week's steps are re-capped each time, and there is no pressure to do "homework" unless you want to!

Do I need a partner?
No, the Charleston taught on the course is a form of solo jazz dance and is not danced in couples. Occasionally some of the routines have choreography that pairs dancers up for some moves, so there can be a little bit of physical contact, but we do not dance in couples. People do book with their partner sometimes, which is a great way to spend the evening together, but they do not dance as a pair.

How fit do I need to be?
Another benefit of dancing is that, if you are not fit, that will be improved by the end of the course! Everyone works to their own level so, as long as you are with the music, making the effort and expressing the style of the dance, then it is not necessary to jump about unless you want to. Some participants have been over 80 years old, others have attended with their wrist in a cast or with other injuries and limitations. Just stay safe and enjoy yourself whilst doing the best you can in your own circumstances.
